Pond plants for deeper margins
UK-Grown for Healthy, Balanced Ponds
Our collection of deep-water pond plants UK-grown are ideal for planting in the deeper zones of your pond, usually at depths greater than 15 cm above the soil in the planting basket. Unlike marginals, these plants thrive when their roots are fully submerged, sending leaves and flowers up through the water to create surface interest and valuable cover for pond wildlife.
Why Choose Deep-Water Plants?
-
Add variety beyond water lilies for mid to deep pond shelves
-
Improve pond oxygen levels and absorb excess nutrients
-
Provide cover and shelter for fish, frogs, and aquatic insects
-
Create striking leaves and flowers that rise above the water’s surface
How to Plant Deep-Water Pond Plants
Most species prefer still water, although some tolerate gentle flow. Please always check the recommended planting depth for each variety, which is available on the plant page. Deeper water plants are best placed in aquatic baskets with a heavy garden loam or topsoil. Lower the baskets carefully into position on a deep shelf or blocks to achieve the correct depth.
Remember: unless you fancy donning a wetsuit, avoid placing plants deeper than arm’s reach so you can access them for maintenance!
Choosing the Right Number
How many deep-water plants you need depends on your pond size and the species selected. Please see individual plant descriptions for guidance on spacing and suitability.
